Description : Asturica Augusta is a Roman city in the province of Tarraconaise . Today it is the city of Astorga in the province of León in Castile and León . It was founded around 14 BC. AD as the Legio X Gemina camp . Early in the i st century , it develops as city and is the capital of conventus asturicensis . Situated on a hill overlooking a vast territory, from the mountains of León to the irrigated plains of the Páramo , it acquires in the i st and ii th centuries great importance because of the control of the gold mines of the Northwest the Iberian Peninsula . It was also an important communication node which, thanks to numerous routes, was linked to the most important cities of Roman Hispania . Its ruins are hidden under the modern city, and among them we must note the Ergástula , the two thermal complexes, the sewers and the domus with its mosaics of the bear and the birds.
